Fencing Cost Guide, Australia 2026

Price ranges based on current Australian market rates. Actual costs depend on your site conditions, materials, and local labour rates.

Cost by material (installed, per linear metre)

Colorbond steel$130–$175/m

Most popular in Australia. Low maintenance, long lifespan, and available in a wide range of colours.

Treated pine timber$150–$210/m

Classic look but requires periodic oiling or painting every 3–5 years to prevent rot and weathering.

Aluminium slat$180–$300/m

Durable and contemporary. Corrosion-resistant and well suited to coastal locations.

Glass (semi-frameless)$300–$600/m

Premium option. Common for pool fences and front boundaries where unobstructed views are a priority.

Prices include supply and installation at 1.8m height on flat ground with easy access. Gate hardware, removal of existing fencing, and materials freight for regional jobs are typically quoted separately.

Prices by state (Colorbond steel, 1.8m, per linear metre)

StateInstalled rate
Queensland$130–$175/m
Western Australia$130–$175/m

ACT$150–$200/m
Victoria$155–$210/m

NSW and VIC labour rates run 20–25% above the QLD and WA baseline. Regional areas within each state are typically 10–15% cheaper than capital cities but may attract a materials freight charge.

What affects the price

  • ·Fence length: The primary cost driver. Most tradies price per linear metre, so longer runs generally attract a lower per-metre rate.
  • ·Terrain: Sloped or rocky ground requires additional footing work, adding 15–40% to the base labour cost.
  • ·Site access: Narrow side gates or difficult access increases labour time and may prevent machinery from being used, adding 10–20%.
  • ·Materials freight: For metro jobs freight is usually included in the rate. Regional or rural sites can attract a flat freight charge of $300–$1,200 depending on distance and volume. Always ask your contractor to itemise this separately.
  • ·Removal of existing fencing: Demolition and disposal of an old fence typically adds $30–$60 per linear metre depending on material and disposal costs.
  • ·Gates: A standard pedestrian gate adds $900–$1,500. Automated or double driveway gates can add $2,000–$4,500.
